Recently, our Victorian Terrace Peckham project was featured in The English Home in a piece exploring how colour, texture and thoughtful spatial design can transform a period property into a contemporary family home.

Located in Peckham, the renovation centred around balancing the home’s original Victorian character with softer, more modern interiors designed around everyday living. The project focused on creating spaces that felt calm, layered and full of personality whilst still remaining practical for family life.

Working With The Character Of A Victorian Home

One of the most rewarding parts of renovating period properties is finding the balance between preservation and change.

For this project, we wanted to retain the warmth and architectural character of the Victorian terrace whilst introducing a cleaner, more contemporary flow throughout the interiors. Much of the design work focused on improving natural light, strengthening the relationship between rooms and creating a greater sense of openness within the house.

Rather than overpowering the original architecture, the interiors were designed to sit gently alongside it.

Colour, Texture & Contemporary Living

The English Home feature focused particularly on the use of colour and materiality throughout the project.

At Kinder Design, we’re often drawn to interiors that feel layered and expressive without becoming visually overwhelming. Softer tones, natural materials and tactile finishes were used throughout the house to create warmth and atmosphere, allowing the spaces to feel contemporary whilst still deeply comfortable and easy to live in.

Many of the design decisions were intentionally subtle - shifts in texture, tone and light that build gradually across the home rather than relying on singular statement moments.

Designing Around Family Life

As with many residential renovation projects, practicality sat alongside aesthetics from the very beginning.

The layout was carefully considered to support everyday family life, creating rooms that feel connected, flexible and liveable long-term. Storage, circulation and functionality were integrated quietly into the design process so the interiors could feel calm and uncluttered without becoming overly minimal.

The aim was to create a home that felt timeless rather than trend-led.
