The Before
Victorian Terrace, Peckham
Colour was the defining move. Deep orange in the living room, green upstairs – decisions that required real trust from the client, and which I think changed how he saw his own home. We commissioned encaustic tiles for the hallway and both bathrooms, adding texture and pattern that felt considered rather than decorative.
The kitchen was a textbook example of the concept of investing in the front rather than back: IKEA carcasses fronted with something better. It’s an approach I’ve used on other projects – it keeps costs controlled without compromising on the finish, and can be far more sustainable than specifying an entirely new kitchen from scratch.
The result was a house that finally matched its owner – specific, colourful, and completely unafraid.

As a single professional with a Victorian terrace in Peckham, my client knew he wanted something bold but didn’t quite trust himself to go there. By the end of the project, he’d found the joy of design and now collects art. That shift – from uncertainty to confidence – is one of the things I find most satisfying about this work.
I worked again with the architect Joe Morizzo, whose technical expertise was invaluable. Together we removed a couple of chimney breasts at the back of the house, which transformed the flow immediately and gave the kitchen and living spaces room to breathe.
