We are proud to see the Gin Distillery project in Whitechapel featured by The Modern House as part of their "My Modern House" series, which explores homes defined by a strong sense of individuality and design clarity.
Originally a Victorian gin distillery, this South East London property was reimagined by Kinder Design and Open Practice Architecture as a layered, light-filled family home. The interiors celebrate the original structure’s industrial past while introducing warmth, texture and a quiet sense of calm through considered material choices and spatial planning.
Exposed brick, lime-washed plaster, oak joinery and a restrained colour palette bring softness to the robust architectural elements. Designed for Leo Wood, founder of Kinder Design, and Rupert Scott of Open Practice Architecture, the home exemplifies a collaborative approach to design, balancing function, beauty and authenticity.
The Modern House highlights how the Gin Distillery reflects a "modern way to live" - prioritising natural light, tactile materials and fluidity of space. Kinder Design is dedicated to creating homes that evolve naturally from the story of the building and the lives of those who inhabit them.
