A colour-drenched blue home office in Waterloo designed by Kinder Design, featuring Edward Bulmer’s Azurite paint, a bespoke blue valchromat desk, and a red &Tradition armless chair positioned in front of a large sash window with natural light streaming in.

At Kinder Design, we’ve always believed that colour has the power to transform not just a room, but how we feel in it. And nowhere is that more true than in a home office - a space that has to support focus, comfort, and creativity in equal measure.

So when our Waterloo client asked us to reimagine his spare room as a dedicated workspace, we knew we wanted to do more than just add a desk and call it a day. We wanted the space to feel immersive, energising, and a true reflection of her character. A room that was both calming and quietly bold.

And the answer? A deep, rich, unapologetic blue.

Why Blue Colour Drenching Works in a Home Office

Most people default to white ceilings without thinking. But at Kinder, we love a room that’s wrapped in colour - walls and ceilings. Colour drenching works particularly well in rooms like studies or snug lounges where you want a sense of comfort and containment.

We chose Azurite by Edward Bulmer Natural Paint - a warm, yellow-based blue that changes beautifully throughout the day. As Edward Bulmer himself describes it: “like a jewel at night and colourful during the day.” It makes for an exceptional Zoom backdrop and gives the room a calm, enveloping quality perfect for deep concentration.

Bespoke Desk Design That Blends Form and Function

We worked with our long-time collaborators at East JR to design a bespoke desk that stretches wall-to-wall, allowing our client to switch easily between sitting and standing while working. The desk is made from blue valchromat, a material we love for its natural pigments, smooth finish, and sustainability credentials. It’s functional, minimal, and made to last - a design ethos we apply to every bespoke joinery piece.

Design That Balances Practicality and Personality

Because this home office connects directly to a candy-pink hallway (yes, really), we wanted to keep the palette bold but balanced. The final touch? A sculptural red armless chair from &Tradition - chosen not only for its punchy colour and compact size, but also for its ergonomic support.

It’s these final flourishes that elevate a room from practical to personal. From the layered blues to the contrast red chair, this space now feels dynamic, functional and full of character - just like the client who uses it.
