The Before

Victorian Terrace, Waterloo



We knocked through the wall between the two reception rooms and installed reclaimed brass doors to flood the space with light, then lined the walls with bookshelves. At the back of the first floor, a dark blue room became a dedicated study.
Upstairs, we moved the bedroom to the front of the house to make the most of the light and completely rethought the bathroom, including adding a bespoke vanity unit.
In the kitchen we paired the fun existing magenta cabinets with a reclaimed teak worktop sourced from a Sheffield school science block – probably 50 years old, and all the better for it. On the walls are bespoke colourful ceramic tiles commissioned from Charlotte Moore, which my client saw as investing in artwork rather than simply tiling her kitchen.
Lastly, for storage, we added a couple of quirky pieces, a metal bookcase and some hallway storage made from recycled plastic, and we worked with EJ Ryder Joinery on four bespoke pieces throughout the house, including a dragon-wallpapered wardrobe in the bedroom and storage built around her considerable book collection.
The result is a home that’s bold, considered and completely itself.

My client was a climate change scientist – eclectic, colour-loving, a passionate academic with a teenage son and a beautiful but dark Victorian terrace in Waterloo that wasn’t working hard enough for her family.
The brief spanned living rooms, study, hallway, bedroom, bathroom and kitchen, and came down to three things: more light, better storage, and colour.
