Children’s bedrooms are some of the most enjoyable spaces to design. They give us permission to be a little more playful with colour, pattern and storytelling, while still creating a room that feels considered as part of the wider home.

For a recent residential project, we commissioned mural artist Izzy Bourdillon to create bespoke artwork for two children’s bedrooms. One featured a playful monkey against a warm peach palette, while the other was home to a rather magnificent leopard surrounded by shades of green.

Designing A Bespoke Mural Around The Whole Room

From the beginning, we wanted the bespoke murals to feel integrated into the bedrooms rather than like an artwork applied to a single feature wall. We worked with Izzy to map the designs across the rooms, allowing characters and smaller details to appear in different places and catch your eye as you move around the space.

Thinking about the mural in this way made it part of the architecture of the room. The artwork could wrap around corners and respond to furniture, doors and the different viewpoints within each bedroom, creating something much more immersive.

Getting The Colour Palette Right

We also worked closely with Izzy on the colours used within each mural. Children's rooms can easily become visually busy, particularly once toys, books and all the realities of family life are added, so it was important that the murals worked calmly with the furniture and wider colour schemes.

The result is playful without feeling overly themed. The peach and green bedrooms each have their own character, but the murals sit comfortably within the overall interior rather than dominating it.

Creating Something Completely Unique

Commissioning artists and makers is one of our favourite ways to bring personality into a home. Bespoke pieces introduce something that simply can't be replicated by buying everything ready-made, and in a child's bedroom there's also something particularly lovely about creating an environment specifically for the person who will grow up in it.

In this case, our youngest clients were very happy with the result, which is probably the most important review of all.
