We’re pleased to be included in House & Garden’s feature exploring the reality behind building your own home - from the emotional ups and downs to the joy of seeing a design come to life.

Leo Wood, founder of Kinder Design, shares her experience of co-designing and building The Coach House in East Dulwich with her partner Rupert Scott of Open Practice Architecture. The piece offers a personal insight into what it takes to transform a disused plot into a bold, design-led family home - and how creativity, trust and flexibility are just as important as any building material.

Warm living space at The Coach House, featuring built-in timber joinery, soft lighting and mid-century furnishings — designed by Kinder Design, a South East London interior designer.

As a studio specialising in bold interior design with feeling, Kinder Design brought warmth, tactility and layered calm to every corner of the space. The Coach House reflects our belief that design isn’t about perfection - it’s about shaping homes that support the people who live in them, day to day

Rupert now helps others through this process too, working with clients who are looking to find and build homes of their own. If you’re considering a self-build and want to know where to start - from feasibility to finishes - we’re always happy to share what we’ve learned.
