Modern build interior of bedroom with open window looking out to greenery in the garden, wooden clad walls and a beige cream bed

I’m excited to see the home I built with Open Practice Architecture featured in Dezeen, one of the most influential platforms in architecture and interior design. Even more exciting? Seeing it described as “architecturally unique”—a true honour!

As an interior designer, working on this project from the ground up was a rare and rewarding experience. Every detail was considered to create a thoughtful, well-designed living space, balancing functionality, comfort, and aesthetics. The project was a true collaboration, blending modern architecture with a warm and inviting interior design approach, resulting in a calm, light-filled family home.

A Home Designed for Real Life

One of the main goals of this project was to design a home that felt effortless to live in. The emphasis was on practicality, sustainability, and energy efficiency, ensuring that the space not only looked beautiful but also worked seamlessly for day-to-day life.

The article on Dezeen does a fantastic job of capturing this vision:

"The focus was on creating a calm, light-filled, and practical family home, that was also well-insulated and energy-efficient."

From the spatial planning to the carefully selected materials and finishes, every decision was made with longevity and everyday usability in mind. Thoughtful storage solutions, a natural colour palette, and an emphasis on quality craftsmanship all played a part in shaping a home that is both stylish and highly functional.

The Details That Sparked Conversation

It’s always interesting to see what details people pick up on in a project. The comments at the bottom of the Dezeen article reveal a particular fascination with the relationship between our kitchen and downstairs loo—a funny but unexpected topic of discussion!

A Huge Thank You

None of this would have been possible without the incredible team involved. Huge thanks to Open Practice Architecture for their vision and expertise, to Ellen Christina Hancock and Lewis Gregory Photogrpahy for capturing the space so beautifully, and to Jon Astbury for the thoughtful write-up.

This project was a dream to work on, and I hope it inspires others who are looking to create a functional yet beautifully designed home. If you’re planning a home renovation or need help designing a space that truly works for you, I’d love to chat!
