How to Choose the Right Interior Designer

With so many interior designers in London and beyond, how do you know which one is the right fit for your project? Whether you're looking for an interior designer to revamp your home or need help with a commercial interior design project, here are a few key things to consider:

1. Style & Aesthetic

Browse a designer’s past projects to see if their work resonates with you. Keep in mind that a good designer will tailor each project to their client’s needs, so not every portfolio piece will reflect their personal taste. If you’re looking for a playful, colourful interior designer, make sure their work aligns with that aesthetic.

2. Core Values

Do they prioritise sustainable interior design, support local makers, or focus on ethical sourcing? If these values are important to you, choosing a designer with a similar ethos will ensure a more aligned collaboration.

3. Location

Hiring a London interior designer based near you means they can visit your project site more frequently, but don’t rule out remote designers—many interior design consultations can now be done virtually.

4. Team Size

For smaller projects, a boutique interior design studio or solo designer may be a better fit. Larger projects might benefit from a bigger design team with access to broader resources.

5. Project Type

Most interior designers specialise in either residential or commercial spaces. If you’re designing an office, café, or retail space, a residential interior designer can sometimes be a great fit, particularly for smaller commercial projects. For larger commercial spaces, you’ll want a designer experienced in the technical regulations involved.

6. Customer Reviews

Check testimonials on their website or Google reviews. A highly-rated London interior designer will have happy past clients who vouch for their professionalism and creativity.

7. Chemistry

Once you’ve narrowed it down, set up a consultation to see if you “click” with the designer. Interior design projects are collaborative, so good communication and trust are essential for a smooth experience.

If you’re currently on the hunt for an interior designer in London, I hope these tips help! And of course, if you think Kinder Design might be the right match for your project, we’d love to hear from you!
