The Before

Button Factory, De Beauvoir

The key move came early. Francesca at Jetsam Made – whose powder-coated metal frame and plywood insert kitchens I'd earmarked for this, the right client – suggested knocking down a dividing wall. It meant we could create a much better connection between the kitchen at the back, a dining and desk zone in the middle with a reading nook where a dead corner had been, and the living area at the front, with windows at either end.

Kitchen cabinet colours – deep green for the main run, limey yellow for the desk area – are bold but deliberate, with the yellow threading back to the green without competing, while reeded glass overhead cabinetry keeps the whole thing from feeling too industrial. The mauve floor tiles in the kitchen area came from the sofa: I spotted the maroon upholstery and followed the thread. The colours are unusual but have a certain harmony, and chosen to suit this adventurous, playful client.

Jack at Worksmith built the dining bench around Vinay's record collection from a sketch and a conversation: two metres of vinyl storage, designed into the angles of the space.
The result is a home that's specific, soulful and completely his own.

My client’s girlfriend recommended me to him, on the basis that we’d work well together – and we did. A senior figure in the media, his house, part of a private mews in Dalston, was a white shell when he bought it: all triangles and angles, awkward on paper and interesting in practice.

The brief was to create a kitchen, dining and living space where he and his teenage son could cook, eat and spend time together, with a desk zone that felt connected rather than separate.

"I had just bought a house and it was a real blank canvas. From the first moment with Leo, I knew it was the right choice. She put me at ease, worked with my budget, and guided every decision, steering me away from choices I might have made and creating a soothing colour palette. She's turned a quirky space into a home that works exactly how I want to live, cook and relax, using every corner and pocket of natural light. Even my record collection got the special treatment it needed.
Designing a home isn't just about colours and furniture, it's about flow, feeling and the soul of a place, and Leo brings that same precision and thought to every choice, much like an artist. I have the most lovely, soulful home and it has exceeded my expectations. Thank you, Leo, your work is outstanding."
