Gin Distillery, Whitechapel

Working alongside my husband Rupert Scott, founder of Open Practice Architecture, we together designed, built and did the interior design at this old Gin Distillery, which was our family home for several years.

“The Gin Distillery is a wonderful example of exemplary contemporary architecture patched together with considered heritage reclamation and restoration. A project of palimpsests with the richness of the original Victorian building complimented by the quality of the contemporary interventions.”

Back in 2013, my husband and I purchased a derelict warehouse in the corner of a car park in Whitechapel. His architecture practice devised a beautiful scheme for this site, building into the original warehouse in a sensitive, understated way.

We achieved planning to convert this commercial site into a family home and were on site for a year with our contractor Evoke Projects, finally completing the project in 2017.

We were delighted to win a RIBA London award and to be longlisted for RIBA House of the Year. As part of this nomination, we were featured on Grand Designs with Kevin McCloud.

We sourced all the furniture for the warehouse on a tight budget. Vintage pieces were found by trawling a range of places such as antiques markets, Gumtree and eBay. Several beds were sourced from Love Your Home, rugs were sourced from high street sellers such as La Redoute and Ferm Living and several other affordable suppliers.
